HURRICANE GYRO/WIND MORPHER

Version reviewed: Wind Morpher

For a detailed review of the Japanese Hurricane Gyro, see Sentai Toy News and Reviews. The only apparent differences in the American version appear to be no metallized gold plastic (without it there there's no risk of it rubbing off, I guess), the Hurricanger symbol on the strap is not outlined in white (the Japanese strap is nylon, not vinyl) and the stickers on the medals aren't glittery (also probably different batteries).

This morpher comes with an interchangable medal for each Ranger to snap onto the gyro. Turning it on makes a beeping sound, but unlike most of the other changers this one does not make a tone every few seconds to remind you it's on. There's a very diminutive red light at the top of the morpher which flashes during every function. The Alarm button (not a communication button? crazy.) sounds for about 6 seconds before fading out. Thankfully it is not a shrill or jarring noise. Pressing the bolt activates throwing star mode, a tone will sound and then you can spin the gyro to make a shooting sound with flashing light. The faster you spin the gyro, the faster the shots which is a nice touch. Pressing the morphing button will start a pulsating noise that will fade after 5 seconds. If you spin the gyro during the pulsating noise, the transformation sound will play followed by someone saying "HA!" like they do on Hurricanger. I found it pretty silly that the morpher said "HA!" for me.

The gyro spinning is more fun than it sounds. Having any kind of emphasized/encouraged physical interaction helps to make a transformation device more fun (hence the high grade of the Aurachanger) as opposed to just pressing buttons. The only minor complaint I have is that the LED light is tiny and not very bright (and that it said "HA!", but no matter). The Wind Morpher goes for around $10-15 on Ebay and appears regularly. If you're lucky, your local Toys R Us may still have Ninja Storm morphers on clearance for about $7 each.

Final Word: Fun spin gimmick, good design. B
